The Summer Plan

I may have killed this parsley.

A friend asked today if we had a plan for summer. (Hi Katie!) I have certainly made plans and non-plans in the past (Summer 2011, Summer 2010Summer 2009 Remember the Trident of Creativity?Summer 2008). Most years, I've had more time to ruminate about summer plans. This year, the whirlwind of 5th grade graduation kept me busy. We woke up on the first day of summer without a plan or non-plan in sight.

On the way home from yoga class this morning Max and I discussed what kind of structure we might like to apply to these lazy summer days. We have yoga on Tuesday mornings and Max will spend some time with Frank in his lab on Thursday mornings. Max suggested some pencil and paper time in the early afternoon and there's a huge pile of books to read. We have a few art projects we'd like to tackle. We will swim a lot and take turns trying to keep the thirsty plants alive.

Max wants to learn how to cook some simple things on his own and plans to master opening a combination lock in record time in preparation for junior high.

I'd like to keep my camera in hand and take more photographs.

So I think this summer shapes up to more of a non-plan. We have the tiniest bit of structure for our week and a handful of things we really want to do - that seems like plan enough.

Right now, I'm going to go watch Max build the most beautifully awesome bridge that Minecraft has ever seen and then we are having popsicles on the porch.

What are your plans for the summer?

  1. Once we get through 6th grade celebration, we have the following on tap: the boys and I are planning dinner at a sushi/tapas restaurant where your food comes to you on a conveyor belt; Carter has YMCA camp in August and Ethan will do some soccer camp; there are, of course, books to be read (Carter wants to read The Hunger Games with me); I want to go to the Eric Carle Museum in Northampton, MA; and I want to make tie-dye shirts with the boys.

  2. I have only myself to entertain anymore, but these plans sound like fun!
