Scaring the Birds

So our little garden is going great. We are pulling cherry tomatoes almost every day, and the basil is obviously trying to conquer the world.

Our only problem is the birds who insist on eating the tomatoes the very instant they are ripe enough to pick – nine times out of ten beating me to them. There's nothing more disappointing than finding a bunch of bird-chomped tomatoes first thing in the morning.

So, I googled and found that tomato eating birds are pretty common and putting "bird netting" over your plants is the best way to protect them, but I tell you, I could not face another trip to the big box store this month. My head started hurting and from inside my purse, I could hear my wallet burst into tears. Just then, my good friend Google reminded me that birds can be frightened off by shiny things, so I came up with this.

Yes, strips of foil that flutter in the slightest breeze and a cd.

I swear, the birds won't go near the place now.

I am scaring birds with The Wiggles!

  1. Netting saved the cherries on our tree! The Wiggles would scare me. Or Raffi.

  4. Alas, the birds were only fooled for about 24 hours, now I'm dashing into the backyard, waving my arms and shouting "SHOO" whenever I catch one of them mid-tomato-banquet.

Tomorrow I will rustle up some netting.

  5. Hey--don't knock the Wiggles! I have clear memories of sitting on the couch with Nathan, watching the show and (yes, I admit it) lusting after Greg...I can't help it! He's hot!

Anyway, I hope you can keep the pesky critters away!

  6. CORRECTION--Not Greg, no, it was ANTHONY on whom I had the crush. I just got the names mixed up.

    Oh, the sideburns...

  8. Hee, hee! You guys sound positively lecherous, lusting after Wiggles!

I can't make things grow! I'm so envious that you have grown things that birds want to eat!
