The Shape of the Day

I've had a crazy busy couple of weeks with appointments and doctors and school things. Every day I would look at the list of things that had to be done, places I had to go, and sigh.

After I had mentioned my "very busy weeks" to a handful of people, I made an astounding discovery: most of you are this busy all the time. What drives me to distraction is business as usual for a whole lot of people.

While I assumed I was just stumbling around over here, it seems that I have actually carved out a way of life that's pretty extraordinary. Usually, my life is full of large swaths of time in which to write, or knit, or sit on the porch or the back steps. I can, on most days, sit down and read for an uninterrupted hour or two.

It wasn't until the last few weeks, that I got enough distance from what makes a normal day for me to see my everyday world so clearly.

I am grateful for the shape of the day, most days. I consider myself lucky.

  1. I am so, so, so glad that I'm not the only one whose days are like this. I am constantly doodling about, doing occasional chores in between to justify my existence. When I told a friend that I sometimes liked to watch a movie during the day, she looked at me as if I were insane. I think some people's "craziness" is self-created, and I'm a much happier person for not going down that road. Now, where's my book?

  2. Interesting! I set aside at least one hour most days after lunch to read. I try not to schedule appts, I don't answer the phone, I stay off the computer and then I read whatever I like. I hear comments ranging from "must be nice" to "I wish I could do that".

Well, I understand because I used to say the same thing. But now I just take the time to do it because I realized that no one was going to hand it to me. And it makes such a difference in my day!

  3. Oh I so know what you mean--my days are much like yours--and then when they're suddenly not, it seems so, SO hard! I've made a conscious choice to NOT have an extraordinarily busy life--and I'm well aware that it's quite a luxury to even have the choice in the first place. But it goes beyond be able to make the choice--it's allowing myself, ourselves, to make the choice. It's so easy to just keep adding it on--even without a 9 to 5 job. Not just easy--expected. And to say no to that can be a difficult thing indeed. But yes, when those unusually busy weeks happen, I end up feeling ever so grateful for the life I have...
