The Best Gift

My Mother's Day was filled with the usual ingredients: laughter, gifts, good food, sunshine. There were lots of hugs, some monkey noises and a few fart jokes.

The Kid gave me a book he made detailing my motherly goodness, titled Mom Rocks on Every Day. The text is in the form of an acrostic poem, and would, I assure you, bring tears to your eyes.

Lefty and The Kid also gifted me with a necklace I have been coveting. I have long been a fan of Andrea Scher of Superhero Designs and I now have a superhero necklace to call my very own. Here's the front and here's the back.

The happiest moment of my weekend, however, was not even connected with Mother's Day. The Kid had a presentation in the school district's Technology Showcase on Saturday. He stood in front of the audience and narrated his power point presentation. He spoke slowly and clearly. When he was finished, he asked, "Any questions?"

He answered a question or two and then the third question was a little more technical. Without a moment's hesitation, he strode over to the computer (which was projecting onto a large screen at the front of the room), opened the software and proceeded to demonstrate the answer. A noticeable murmur rippled through the audience – it was electric.

Afterwards, I explain that this happens sometimes when you witness a person who is really in "the flow" – doing something they really love.

I have never been so proud and it was the greatest gift I could ask for, to watch my child grow before my very eyes, to see him in a new light.

  4. Watching your child grow into the person you hope they will be... ya, that's the greatest gift, and a true reflection of your influence as his/her parent.

You must be doing a good job at this thing called "mothering."

  5. Hey thanks Anon, but I cannot really take much credit. I am floundering around at mothering most of the time...

  6. Love the necklace, love the card even more, and what a great story. How awesome that he is so comfortable in front of a crowd. I still get a little sideways with that one.
