The Vision Board

In January I decided to create a vision board, a collection of words and images to represent my hopes and dreams for this year. A way of conjuring the things I want into my life. I know how powerful the subconscious can be in creating reality and am convinced I have conjured people back into my life at times by sheer force of will.

I love the boards Karen did with her daughter and looked here for specific instructions. I compiled a file folder full of images and then, hit a solid wall of resistance. The reminder to "do this" kept popping up on my calendar but I had a host of reasons not to. I was too busy. I had too many errands to run. I didn't have the right kind of board. I didn't have the right kind of glue. There was no time to get glue, no time to make time. The folder languished on my desk.

Then two things happened to rattle me out of my resistance. I remembered that my sense of "not enough time" rubs off onto The Kid. I noticed he was scheduling the things he wanted to do for the weekend, making a list and cramming things in as if there was not enough Saturday and Sunday to go around. I also remembered that it is the things that I most resist that often lift me up and bring me joy.

So on Saturday morning, I very casually made my vision board, no announcement just sauntered up to the kitchen table, still in my pjs and did it. No special glue, no fancy board. Just scissors and a glue stick and me. I tried to remain lighthearted as I moved the images around and ignored the voices that said: This is ridiculous. You cannot want that. That is impossible. This is ugly. You're not doing it right.

I let all the negative grumbling wash out of my system. I finished the vision board and I liked it. A project I had expended a lot of energy actively avoiding for almost two months took fifteen minutes to complete.

Now it's hanging over my desk, a constant reminder of all the things I was almost too afraid for wish for. Almost.

  2. Laura! You should definitely do one to conjure the perfect house in Hot Springs.

(I'm trying to un-languish my blog. Wish me luck!)
