The Trouble with Harry Potter

Thanks to everyone who commented and emailed and talked to me on the phone about The Kid and the trouble we were having with HP & the Deathly Hallows. I took all of your suggestions to heart and then arranged them into a pretty successful solution. I told The Kid that I was having trouble with thinking and worrying a lot about the story and that it was making it hard for me to go to sleep. I offered him two options: to put the book away for a while or to move our reading time to afternoons. He, without a second of hesitation, chose putting the book away for the time being. I gave him an easy out, and he didn't have to admit that the book was upsetting him.

Last night, he went right to sleep.

  1. Brilliant! Giving him the choice to stop now, you also gave him the choice as to when to begin again.

It's different for every kid. Ethan, for example, was fine with HP, but for some reason Scooby Doo can have this effect on him.

If you're looking for something else to read with him that has fantasy & adventure elements, but is hardly scary, check out books by Edward Eager. We liked "Half Magic" alot.
