Another Weekend Round Up

I know what you're going to ask – did I spend my weekend getting caught up on those pesky Christmas chores – and the answer is no, I did not. I know I'm going to pay for it with all kinds of rushing around the next couple of days, but it was worth it to have a quiet weekend.

On Friday night, The Kid had a belt ceremony and received his advanced purple belt in Kenpo Karate. I am so proud of him and how hard he's worked. I tell you, he has crazy amounts of focus and drive. It's inspiring. It was fun, except for the parents in the back of the room who talked to each other (and on their cell phones) through the whole thing. It was unbelievable that adults would be so blatantly rude not only to the instructor and the other kids and parents, but to their own kids! When did common courtesy go so out of style?

We did Saturday sort of things on Saturday. The Kid's swimming lesson, lunch, dinner. I burned the roasted potatoes and we had to rename them incinerated potatoes. They were still pretty darn good.

Today we just hung out around the house. I baked some things, made soup. Very mellow. While he was drawing something today, The Kid said "damn it" and we had a little talk about words and their appropriateness. I tried to encourage him to make up his own crazy words to use when exasperated rather than relying on some tired old swear word he picks up from a classmate. I tried to explain that words are just words, but some grown ups will get upset if he uses them. It must be really confusing to be a kid.

So, what did you do this weekend?

  1. Congrats to kid on the purple belt. I wish I had a dart gun to shoot at people who talk on cell phones during social events.

We were sitting behind a couple last night at an Indian restaurant, and the guy's cell phone rang and he answered it THREE times. We listened to THREE of his conversations I hope I'm never that important.
