The Extra Hour of Sleep

Returning to standard time and the often celebrated extra hour of sleep mean nothing to me. This is probably true for a lot of parents with children under the age of twelve. My sister assures me that when they are twelve, they want to sleep in. The Kid wakes up between 6 and 6:30 no matter what time we put him to bed. The Kid’s body clock knows not of time changes and standard vs. daylight savings.

The Kid is waking up now between 5 and 5:30 and though he knows he’s supposed to stay in bed till the clock says six three zero, he called out at 5am this morning, “Mom! Mom, I am wiiiide awake. Can I please get up?” Notice how he said please, my boy of the good manners.

Now, I’m not complaining because he’s rousing me from Dreamland. No, I am a morning person, an early riser of the first order. I usually get up around 5am in order to have a little quiet time before the hurry and rush of the morning sets in. Because I’m a writer, this has often been the only time I had to get writing done. Now that I’m not working, I don’t have to cram my writing into such a tiny space. I can now sit and listen to the coffeemaker groan and hiss and stare into space and watch the handsome weather guy on the local morning show.

So, if The Kid’s early rising were interrupting sleep or work, I would have a case for complaining. But since my complaint would sound like this, “Go back to sleep. I’m staring into space and thinking about coffee!” I have to let him get up and then be cheerful about it.

It was kind of nice, having him to myself for a few minutes this morning before Lefty got up and joined us. We talked about school and knitting. I knit and The Kid wants me to teach him. I think Santa may leave knitting needles and yarn in his stocking.

Then Lefty was up (Lefty is still fielding exclamations about his shorn locks. Two people at school this morning said, “I didn’t recognize you” and the secretary of his department literally shrieked when he walked into the office this morning.) and The Kid began what I believe to be one long continuous sentence about Pokémon training and strategies that went on and on until we dropped him off at school this morning. I am a lover of all things Pokémon (Hi Squirtle!) but after the first five minutes of these eloquent rants, I tend to zone out and think about chocolate or yarn or who will be the next Iron Chef.

I missed my little hour of reverie and yawns this morning. Did you get your extra hour of sleep?

  1. The time change is kicking my ass too... And I used to love "fall back".

    *sigh*

  2. I did get my extra hour of sleep, thank you very much. I love that your kid wakes up chipper. One of mine does and one of mine doesn't. Guess which one I like to have breakfast with?

  3. Today was the first day (since Sunday) that my younger son was not up between 5 and 5:30, rather than 6 and 6:30. He's 5 years old now, but two years ago, this time shift lasted for a few months. And since moving in with my husband back in 1989 (a year before we married), I have been becoming less and less of a morning person with every passing year. I am more of a night owl, and I need (NEED!) that extra hour. Especially since I was awake between 1:15 and 3:15 with my older son, who was coughing, wheezing and unable to sleep.

Thanks for listening to my rant.
